:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Canopus -- A Great Period of American History : A very detailed and well written biography. What interested my was the time from, from the end of the Indian Wars, the Spanish American War in Cuba, and the almost war with Mexico against Villa, and of course WWI. This is not a well known figure today, but is up there in importance as is Grant, Patton, MacArthur and company. The amount of hugely important American History this man has seen, he had met the prime movers in History, and was there for the transfer of the old "Cavalry" and Armies to modern war. It is a thoroughly researched book. and connects the dots when reading the biographies from McKinley to Wilson and beyond. I do not know why a movie was not made about this man, but there should be. I saw the movie "1917" by coincidence and timing. A required history to read. Note also you see the beginning of the careers of Patton and MacArthur . - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Bruce Kendall -- I enjoyed both volumes : I enjoyed both volumes. Although, at first I was put off by what I interpreted as Vandiver's infatuation affair with Pershing. But somewhere before the middle of the first volume Vandiver settled in and told a respectable history based biography of Pershing. Both volumes were placed on my bookshelf to read again, and not donated to Goodwill. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2018 )

- 5.0 out of 5 stars from William Jevning -- One of my favorite books : I bought this some time ago, and as George Patton is one of my favorite public figures, I wanted to know more about his beginnings in the Army. Pershing was really an exceptional man, this two volume book is really a great read. Pershing is someone we almost hear nothing about anymore, but he was only the third man to become General of the Army after George Washington and Ulysses Grant, and his accomplishments shaped the 20th century. This book is well worth having for anyone who is interested in history, a must have! ( Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2013 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Lawrence D. David -- Excellent biography of a great American general : to him later in life. Many of the subordinates he mentored and nurtured all either proved essential to the building and command of the AEF and/or became the pillars of America's armed forces in World War II (Marshall, Patton, and MacArthur, for example). This biography does have a few editorial flaws. Dr. Vandiver, who was a prodigy who never attended high school or undergraduate school, does some excellent writing for having had no formal coursework, but he does have a shocking weakness in writing subordinate clauses as separate sentences. Of which this is an example. A good editor would have caught the few dozen instances in this work and revised the grammar. Also Dr. Vandiver sometimes drops articles from a sentence, resulting in some clumsy passages. Again, good editing would have corrected these. At the end of the second volume, as Pershing's retirement approaches, Dr. Vandiver omits the necessary explanation that, in 1924, the mandatory retirement age in the armed forces was 64; the reader has to infer that from the narrative. Nevertheless Dr. Vandiver hit a home run with his biography of Pershing, and it deserved far more acclaim and exposure than it has enjoyed in the past 20 years. Reading about this genuine American hero was a breath of fresh air in these times of antiheroes. America today surely needs more men like General Pershing. Thanks to Dr. Vandiver, he will not be forgotten. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 1999 )
